TSG Annual Meeting 2016, LONDON

Date: January 6-8th, 2016

Venue: UCL, London

Dear all,

Just a reminder that the Tectonics Study Group meeting will be co-hosted by University College London and Birkbeck between the 6th–8th of January 2016, with two special workshops taking place on the 4th and morning of the 5th (please note, there is no fieldtrip).

Registration is currently open @ https://www.geolsoc.org.uk/Tectonic-Studies-Group-Annual-Meeting-2016 and closes on Monday 16th of November. (please note, at the time of sending this email, the GeolSoc website is currently experiencing problems).

We have three excellent invited speakers:

  • Prof. Claudia Trepmann (Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich)
  • Prof. Tom Rockwell (San Diego State University)
  • Prof. Whitney Behr (The University of Texas at Austin).

The conference will cover field, experimental and theoretical studies with a specific focus towards the following themes:

  • Geodesy and structural geology
  • Palaeoseismology and earthquake geology
  • Fracture and fluid flow
  • Brittle-ductile transition in rocks
  • Shale geomechanics

Please note: due to logistical issues, the Dorset field trip has been cancelled. However, this has been replace by an exciting full day free workshop run by Midland Valley.

Midland Valley Move workshop:

Midland Valley will be running a day-long workshop on Tuesday 5th January providing a hands-on introduction to quantitative fault analysis and elastic dislocation modelling using two new tools within the Move software suite. Attendees will learn how to build geologically realistic models, perform geometric restorations in 2D and 3D and interrogate their models using advanced fault analysis and modelling techniques.

Cees Paschier microtectonics workshop:

A special workshop will run on the morning of the 6th January, where Professor Cees Paschier from the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz will deliver a 2.5-hour Distinguished Keynote Invited Lecture with practical demonstrations on “Microtectonics”, hosted at the new Birkbeck Petrology Lab. The workshop will be free of charge. More information to follow.

Both of the above workshops will be hosted in the new Birkbeck Petrology Laboratory (below)

Creche / child care facilities
TSG will be, for the first time, offering nursery support (UCL Day Nursery) for those with young children, above the age of 2, who would like to attend but are hindered by child care. We can provide limited support for max. 4 people and this will be given on a ‘first come, first served’ basis. Please contact Tom Mitchell if you are interested in such support.

Best regards,

The convenors,

Gerald Roberts – gerald.roberts@ucl.ac.uk
