Short courses
Two half-day short-courses will be offered on the day before the conference (January 13th).
Short-course 1: Seismic interpretation; application to structural geology and potential pitfalls
Professor Christopher Aiden-Lee Jackson (Imperial College, London) and Dr. Clare Bond (University of Aberdeen) will offer a short-course on the application of seismic-stratigraphic analysis to elucidate fault kinematics in sedimentary basins. Seismic reflection data is a geophysical tool that is, we argue, currently underused by geologists. As such, it should be considered an “Earth Science’ tool, which should be used by all, including structural geologists. In this short course we will teach the basics of the seismic reflection method, before highlighting how seismic-stratigraphic analysis can be used to really understand the structure and evolution of complex structures, including faults and folds. We will then show the importance of assessing and recognising how our own biases, drawn from our previous geological experiences, can negatively impact our ability to accurately interpret seismic profiles. Consider this a fault kinematics ninja class, suitable for anyone with an interest – from MSc to professorial level. Chris is widely known for his application of 3D reflection seismic analysis to address a range of problems in sedimentary basins, including salt tectonics, volcanic systems, mass transport complexes and basin tectonics. He has received several awards for his work and has travelled across America on AAPG and GSA distinguished lecture tours. Chris has worked on seismic-stratigraphic fault analysis in a range of basins world wide, from the North Sea via the Gulf of Suez to South Atlantic basins and the NW Australian shelf.
Clare is a senior lecturer at the University of Aberdeen and is particularly well known for her work on uncertainty analysis in the interpretation of seismic images, as well as for her strong engagement in geoscience outreach. She has acted as the research coordinator for the College of Physical Sciences a role funded by RCUK; and has taken part in debates and panels on shale gas, and climate change. Clare is the current chair of the Tectonic Studies Group, co-directs the Fold-Thrust Research Group and works as part of ClimateXChange.
Short-course 2: Fracture network topology analysis in Network GT
A second short-course in “Fracture network topology analysis in Network GT” will be offered by Dr. Bjørn Nyberg and Dr. Casey Nixon (University of Bergen). Topology has become increasingly important in the assessment of fault and fracture networks, particularly their connectivity and flow properties. Casey has, along with others (notably Tom Manzocchi and David Sanderson), pioneered the use of topology in the analysis of fault and fracture networks. Björn is a an expert in geospatial analysis and has developed NetworkGT, a toolkit for analysing network geometry and topology in ArcGIS. In this short-course, participants will learn to use NetworkGT to analyse their own fracture network data, or on a sample dataset provided at the course. Recommended reading (open access):
